There’s something about photographing seniors that I absolutely love.

They’re right on the edge of becoming. Not quite who they’ve been, not fully who they’re stepping into yet.

And then, every once in a while, someone shows up who already knows.

This session with Zach took place on his private property in very north Scottsdale, right on the edge of Cave Creek. Rugged desert light, his horse Penny by his side. No performance, no trying to be anything other than exactly who he is.

What stood out most wasn’t just the setting, or even Penny, though she was incredible. It was his grounded confidence, his authenticity. Zach has been dual enrolled, building real skills as a welder, stepping into a future with direction and intention. That kind of quiet confidence is rare. Not loud, not performative. Just solid.

Penny isn’t a prop, she’s part of his life. The ease between them, the trust, the familiarity, it adds a layer you simply can’t create. It’s real.

This is why I always tell seniors to bring what matters to them into a session. A place, a sport, an animal, a passion, something that reflects who they are right now. That’s what turns photos into something more.

Because our kids are unique. They are not mini versions of us. They are becoming who they are becoming. And I love the parents who give them the space to do that.

Teens, I see you. And I want to capture who you are.
